A message to past and future exhibitors
The NZ Dairy Event Committee wishes to inform that it has started preparations for the NZDE 2020 event (29th – 31st January 2020).
In mid-2018 the NZDE cancelled the 2019 show due to the uncertainty of running cattle events as a result of the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak throughout NZ. Discussions were held with both MPI and DairyNZ but they were unable to provide definitive advice at that time. In the ensuing period further farms/herds were identified with the disease and the committee has continued to seek input and advice from both MPI and DairyNZ.
Biosecurity New Zealand (Ministry for Primary Industries) released a document “Minimising the risks at shows and events” in October 2018. The document details that “The risk of Mycoplasma bovis spreading at A&P shows, calf days, rodeo and other events where cattle are present is quite low, but there is still a risk wherever cattle may mingle”. Viewable in a previous post.
The committee takes these risks very seriously and are making every effort to determine how the recommendations in this document could be implemented so that the 2020 event is a success. In addition, the committee has recommended to DairyNZ that a system similar to the TB Status system be developed that would have a number of inputs to arrive at a ‘M Bovis Status’.
Our planning at this stage, is that the event is going ahead but there may be something that comes up that would cause the show to be abandoned at a later date. We are working vigorously to avoid any curtailment of the show, so that the premier national dairy stud cattle show can be run and contribute to another successful event in your yearly activities.
